Blake Garcia is currently a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Florida, where he is pursuing a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting. His assistantship duties include mentoring undergraduate conducting students, teaching the Gator Marching Band, and conducting many of the university’s concert bands and chamber ensembles. 

                                                                                                         

Mr. Garcia received a Bachelor of Music from Florida State University in 2008, where he studied conducting with Dr. Alexander Jiménez, and trumpet performance with Dr. Christopher Moore and Bryan Goff. During his time at Florida State University, Mr. Garcia held principal chairs in many of the top ensembles, and also played lead trumpet with Spirit Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps.

 

Upon completion of his degree, Mr. Garcia was appointed Director of Music at Pensacola High School (Pensacola, Florida; 2009-2011). His duties included drill design and music arranging for the marching band, and directing the Symphonic Band, percussion ensemble, beginning and intermediate guitar ensembles, and the Honors Chorus. He also established and conducted the first symphony orchestra in school history. During Mr. Garcia’s tenure, his ensembles were consistently awarded the highest ratings at festivals and competitions, and through diligent recruiting, the band’s membership more than doubled over the course of two years. In 2010, the Florida Bandmasters Association presented Mr. Garcia with the prestigious Tom Bishop Award in recognition of the remarkable positive impact that he made to the program.

 

Prior to his current appointment at the University of Florida, Mr. Garcia was the Associate Director of Bands at J. M. Tate High School (Pensacola, Florida; 2011-2013). His duties included co-directing and music arranging for the marching band, and directing the concert and jazz bands.

His professional affiliations include Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Music Fraternity, the Florida Bandmasters Association, the Florida Music Educators Association, and The National Association for Music Education.

Mr. Garrett Griffin is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in instrumental conducting at the University of Florida. He is a graduate teaching assistant for the symphonic band, concert band, mentors undergraduate conducting students, and works with the Sudler Trophy award winning Gator Marching Band. Mr. Griffin earned his bachelor’s degree in music education from East Carolina University where he studied with Dr. Jeff Jarvis, Dr. Edward Jacobs, and Dr. Gregory Hurley. 

 

Previously, Mr. Griffin was the Director of Ensembles at West Johnston High School in Benson, NC where he served as an associate director from 2005-2011 and as director from 2011-2014.  During his tenure, the marching band performed in the 2008 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and were the premier ensemble for the 2010 ABC Disney Christmas Parade. The fine arts department at West Johnston boasted two Scholastic winter guards and a Scholastic indoor drumline. Each spring, Mr. Griffin was involved in co-directing and producing the annual musical, winning numerous local awards including “Triangle Rising Star” Best Musical.  Mr. Griffin has extensive experience in music and video editing, creating soundtracks and video footage for numerous high schools each year. 

 

Mr. Griffin has 15 years of experience in the marching arts. He was a member of the world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in 2000, 2001, and 2003. In 2004, he joined the staff of The Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps and later, The Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps until 2011. He is an active educator and consultant in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida working with numerous marching bands, indoor drumlines and winter guard programs. Mr. Griffin is a member of NAfME and FMEA.

Benjamin Rochford is currently a doctoral conducting associate and PhD candidate at the University of Florida where his responsibilities include directing the concert band, assisting with the athletic bands, mentoring undergraduate conducting students, and teaching courses in music education and jazz improvisation. Mr. Rochford’s other duties include writing program notes and promoting concerts for Dr. David Waybright and the band department and assisting Professor Scott Wilson with the UF Jazz band. 

 

Mr. Rochford completed a Bachelors degree in Music Education from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania in 2008 and a Masters degree in Instrumental Conducting from Youngstown State University in Ohio in 2012. While at Youngstown State, Mr. Rochford was a graduate assistant with the YSU athletic bands and guest conducted the Wind Ensemble and Dana Chamber Winds. Mr. Rochford’s primary conducting influences include Dr. David Waybright, Dr. Stephen Gage, Dr. Adam Brennan, and Dr. Nathan Rinnert. Mr. Rochford has also participated in conducting symposiums with Ray Cramer, Tom Leslie, Robert Garafalo, Ed Lisk, and Rodney Dorsey and participated in Beethoven conducting master classes with Svilen Simeonov, director of the Sofia Sinfonietta in Bulgaria.

 

Mr. Rochford served as Director of Bands at the Valley Grove School District in Pennsylvania from 2008-2012 where he was responsible for overseeing the entire 5-12 band program. At Valley Grove, Mr. Rochford directed the district’s athletic bands, jazz combo, and elementary, middle, and high school bands. He hosted and managed the PMEA District III Jazz Festival in 2012. He has also given presentations in Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida on a variety of topics including jazz improvisation, rehearsal techniques, student motivation and authentic student self-assessment within the paradigm of Harvard Project Zero and Arts PROPEL. 

 

Mr. Rochford is an active trumpet player throughout central Florida and has performed with the Erie Phil Harmonic Venango Chamber Orchestra,  Mansfield University Faculty Brass Quintet, Franklin Silver Cornet Band, various jazz ensembles, and is currently a member of the University of Florida Wind Symphony, Jazz Band, and Jazz Grad Combo. Mr. Rochford has toured across the United States with wind bands and jazz ensembles and most recently, throughout Italy with The American Chamber Winds. As a jazz musician, Rochford has performed with a number of notable jazz musicians including Dennis DiBlasio, George Rabbai, Michael Davis, Dave Pietro, Ingrid Jensen, Ryan Kisor, Jeff Calindo, Chris Vidala, and Ernie Krivda. Mr. Rochford’s primary trumpet teachers include Dr. Michael Galloway, Dr. Chris Krummel, Rodger Blackburn, and Scott Wilson. He can be heard as a performer on the wind band albums North Central Winds, Concord, and Resonance under the Mark Custom label and the jazz albums Hourglass and La Fiesta.  

 Mr. Rochford’s professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, National Education Association, Pennsylvania Music Education Association, Florida Music Education Association, Florida Bandmasters Association, Jazz Education Network, and the International Trumpet Guild. He was recently elected into the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society.

 

David Santiago is pursuing his Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Florida with Dr. David Waybright. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, he spent most of his academic career in Florida, graduating Cum Laude from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. An established saxophonist, Mr. Santiago has studied with Jonathan Helton, Geoffrey Deibel, and John Thomas (Retired, US Air Force Band) and performed for David Dees, Jean-Michel Goury, and Frederick Hemke at the UF International Master Class Series. He performed with the Zenith Saxophone Quartet at the 2012 International US Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, Virginia and placed as a semifinalist at the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance’s Collegiate Quartet Competition in Tempe, Arizona.

 

Mr. Santiago currently serves as the Assistant Conductor of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra as part of a one-year fellowship to learn the different aspects required in directing an orchestral program. His presentations for the orchestra’s “Symphony for Schools” program reach public, private, and homeschooled students and underserved low-wealth schools to support and enhance each school's existing arts and music curriculum.

 

Mr. Santiago is a Graduate Teaching Assistant and the Head Librarian for the University of Florida Bands. He is a conducting mentor for undergraduate music majors and works on staff for the University of Florida Gator Marching Band. He has taught elementary general music and currently teaches private saxophone lessons in Gainesville. An enthusiast of musical theater, Mr. Santiago has performed in pit orchestras for UF and PK Yonge School productions such as Chicago, Curtains, Damn Yankees, Grease, Hairspray, and In the Heights. His professional affiliations include the Florida Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Dr. David A. Waybright received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at Marshall University and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in orchestral conducting from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He taught initially at Wahama High School in Mason, West Virginia and since that time has served as Director of Bands at Ferrum College, Plymouth State College, and Director of Bands and Orchestra at McNeese State University. Dr. Waybright is currently Director of Bands at the University of Florida, where he holds the rank of professor and is the head of the conducting area. He directs the wind symphony and supervises the band program and the graduate and undergraduate conducting curricula. Dr. Waybright is in demand as a guest conductor and clinician with wind bands, orchestras, and choirs, and has appeared in that capacity in most of the 50 states, throughout Europe, Asia and Australia. He has held residencies at many of the nation's leading music schools. In addition, he is active in the commissioning and performance of new music and has won the praise of composers such as Dana Wilson, Michael Torke, Donald Grantham, John Corigliano and Leslie Bassett for his interpretation of their works. There are many recordings available featuring the University of Florida Wind Symphony under his direction. Dr. Waybright is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association where he serves on the Board of Directors and is a lifetime member of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. He is also a member of the College Band Director\'s National Association, Music Educators National Convention and Florida Music Educators Association. Ensembles under his direction have performed invited concerts at conferences sponsored by all of those organizations. Dr. Waybright is also a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha, Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi. He is a National Arts Associate honorary of Sigma Alpha Iota.

Trumpeter Scott Wilson has established himself as one of the rising stars of jazz – both as a performer and as a pedagogue. Since earning two masters degrees from the University of North Texas and paying his dues on concert stages from Orlando to Osaka, Scott is in constant demand as a player, composer and educator. In addition to his dynamic live and recorded performances on trumpet, he is regarded as one of the world’s foremost proponents of the electronic valve instrument (EVI).  Wilson has diverse international performance credits having shared the stage with jazz luminaries including Benny Green, Wayne Bergeron, Gordon Goodwin, Conrad Herwig, Wycliffe Gordon, Stevie Wonder, Jeff Coffin, Shelly Berg, Denis DeBlasio, Peter Erskine, Eric Marienthal, Bobby Shew, Slide Hampton, Terrell Stafford, Ron Blake, John Pizzarelli, Ed Shaughnessy, Alex Acuna, and others.  He has served as Musical Director for Universal Studios Japan, staff composer for Grand Link World in Qingdao, China, consultant for Walt Disney’s “Magic Music Days” jazz workshops and has been a featured trumpet soloist for Tokyo Disney Sea and Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Orlando.  

 

Wilson has hosted the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Camp, four Juilliard Jazz Summer Workshops and served as faculty for the Jam Camps in Utah. The Garden Music School now hosts the Scott Wilson Jazz Combo Sessions annually in Florida (a week long intensive jazz camp for young musicians), and, in 2011, Warburton Mouthpieces released the Scott Wilson Jazz Mouthpiece that is designed to be a more supportive and functional mouthpiece for young trumpet players.. His jazz texts, The Ultimate Jazz Tool Kit and Ultimate Music Workbook, are published by Kendall Hunt Publishing and accompanied by 35 Jazz Instructional Videos that cover topics ranging from jazz theory to song writing.  Wilson has consistently been at the forefront of the design and use of innovative online platforms for jazz education.  His nationally published online platforms include Jazz Fundamentals 1, Jazz Fundamentals 2, Jazz Aural Skills and Jazz History.  Through Kendall Hunt Publishing these courses can be adopted and delivered to colleges and public schools nationwide. Wilson now serves as Artist Director for Lakeshore Music Jazz Series in Arizona and is the former Artistic Director for the famed Crescent Super Band (Downbeat Award winners 2006-2012). 

 

Scott Wilson is the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Florida and has developed a new Jazz Minor and designed six new jazz courses which allow students to receive current industry skill sets, technology training and learn creative approaches to problem solving.

Andrew Bajorek is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in instrumental conducting at the University of Florida where is a teaching assistant for the concert band, undergraduate conducting classes, and the Sudler Trophy award winning Gator Marching Band. Mr. Bajorek studied at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania to earn his bachelor’s degree in music education.

 

Prior to his graduate studies, he taught music and directed the chorus, D.R.U.M. ensemble, and Orff ensemble at Cunningham Creek Elementary School, located in St. Johns County, Florida. In 2012, Mr. Bajorek was voted “Best New Teacher of the Year.” He is certified in various music pedagogies from leading music education institutions: Orff Schulwerk (Eastman School of Music, 2012), Kodály (Hartt School of Music, 2013), and First Steps in Music (Hartt School of Music, 2013). Mr. Bajorek studied music education concepts personally with Jim Solomon, Karen Medley, and John Feierabend. 

 

Prior to his work in Florida, he held instrumental music teaching positions with the Fort LeBoeuf School District and the Erie School District. While teaching in the Erie School District, Mr. Bajorek instructed the All-City Marching Band. Under his tutelage, the band received high honors, including placing first at the Lakeshore Marching Band Association Championships in 2008. For the 2009-2010 school year, Mr. Bajorek served as an interim director of bands for the prestigious Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy.

 

He has given presentations on the topic of music education and technology most recently at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Convention (2014) and the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Convention (2013): “Music in Our Schools Month: Performance Opportunities for ALL Students” (Hershey, PA) and “There’s an App for That: Technology for Exceptional Learners” (San Antonio, TX). He is an active member of the College Band Directors National Association, the College Music Society, the National Association for Music Education, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Bajorek is a former marching member of the world-champion Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps.

Michael Butler is currently a Ph.D. (ABD) fellow in Music Education and Conducting at the University of Florida. His duties include teaching undergraduate conducting, brass skills, mentoring undergraduate conductors, serving as an assistant conductor with the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and the Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he also co-conducts a concert band, assists with the Gator Marching Band, and serves as the faculty sponsor for the Beta Xi chapter of Tau Beta Sigma.

 

He is a graduate of the University of Florida, where he received his Master’s of Music in Wind Band Conducting and his Bachelor’s in Music Education at Tennessee Tech University. Mr. Butler appears as a performer on two CDs produced by Mark Custom Records. He has arranged works for the trumpet and brass ensemble mediums with the most notable performances including his arrangement of Carmina Burana for trumpet ensemble that was featured at the 2009 National Trumpet Competition and the 2009 International Trumpet Guild Conference. Most recently, his arrangement of Alexander Nevsky for trumpet ensemble was featured at the 2013 International Trumpet Guild Conference.

 

As an educator, Mr. Butler’s teaching experiences include working with several high school bands and orchestras in Tennessee and Florida. Most recently he served as the Director of Bands at William R. Boone High School (Orlando, Florida). Under the direction of Mr. Butler, the William R. Boone High School Wind Symphony was selected to perform at the New York Wind Band Festival hosted at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. Additionally, his Wind Symphony was invited and performed at the Florida Music Educators Conference in Tampa, Florida.

 

Professionally, Mr. Butler has performed with the Johnson City Symphony, the Bryan Symphony, the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, the Appalachian Brass Orchestra, and as a freelance trumpet performer. The National Band Association has awarded Mr. Butler a Citation of Excellence for his contributions to bands and band music. He is affiliated with many professional organizations including the Florida Bandmasters Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Mu Phi Epsilon, the College Band Director’s National Association, the National Band Association, the National Education Association, Kappa Delta Pi, and is also an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma, a National Honorary Band Society.

Joshua Gall is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Florida where he studies Wind Band Conducting with Dr. David Waybright, teaches Concert Band, serves as an undergraduate conducting mentor, assists with courses in Marching Band Techniques, and works with and writes for the 2013 Sudler Trophy Award Winning Gator Band.

 

He has been involved in the performing arts as a teacher, guest director, adjudicator, composer, arranger, drill writer, program coordinator, and clinician for concert bands, marching bands, and indoor percussion ensembles throughout the United States. Recent ventures in teaching and composing have taken him to Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

 

Mr. Gall received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, graduating Magna Cum Laude, from Virginia Commonwealth University.  He studied tuba under Dr. Ross Walter, conducting under the direction of Dr. Terry Austin and Daniel Myssyk, and percussion under Sergeant Major William Messerschmidt of the United States Army Band.  While at VCU he served on the faculty tenure selection committee and was awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Achievement Award by the VCU School of the Arts.

 

Mr. Gall has an extensive background in the marching arts. He participated as a member with the Ten-Time World Champion Cadets Drum Corps for four years and was on staff as a brass specialist for six years.  While on staff with The Cadets, Mr. Gall was a teaching specialist for both the Macy's Day Parade in 2005 and President Obama's historical inauguration in 2008. In addition to his drum corps background, Mr. Gall is involved in the design and instructional process for many high school marching bands, indoor percussion, and guard programs around the country.  He has recently been featured as a guest lecturer on the topic of marching band show design at the drum corps, collegiate, and high school levels.  Currently, he serves in the role of program coordinator, music composer/arranger, and drill writer for over ten programs annually and has written over 75 full shows for competitive programs around the country.

 

Mr. Gall has also experienced great success as a teacher in the public schools in Virginia.  For four years he was an assistant to the director in two programs that both received Virginia Honor Band accolades for consistent superior ratings in both concert and marching band assessment.  During his four years, he assisted in two Virginia Music Educators in-service conference performances for both High School Wind Ensemble and Elementary School Orff Ensemble.  Mr. Gall also serves as Music Director for Music On The River, a middle and high school summer concert band camp in central Virginia.

 

From 2008 to 2011, Mr. Gall served on the National Band Association's William D. Revelli Composition Contest Selection Committee.  He is also a contributing member of development for Pyware Drill Design Software.

 

Prior to relocating to Florida, he and his family founded, owned, and operated Real Music Productions, a multimedia recording and production company from Richmond, Virginia that specialized in the recording of the performing.  During the 12 years of running the company, Mr. Gall oversaw the production of over 4,000 audio and video recordings that were distributed nationally. He was responsible for the production of events such as the Richmond Symphony Concert Series, USSBA National Championships, WGI Regionals, All-Virginia Band and Orchestra Concerts, VBODA State Marching Festival, Atlantic Indoor Association Championships, and approximately seventy other events annually.

 

Mr. Gall’s professional affiliations include Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA).

Dr. Birkner serves as the Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Florida, where he directs the University Concert Bands, Gator Pep Bands, is Associate Director of the Pride of the Sunshine Marching Band, teaches courses in music education, and observes student teachers.  Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Dr. Birkner held positions as the Assistant Director of Bands at College Park HS and Knox JH in The Woodlands, TX, as well as similar positions in Tomball, TX and La Porte, TX.

 

He received his Bachelor of Music Education with Performer’s Certificate, Master of Music in Percussion Performance degrees, and Ph.D. in Music Education/Instrumental Conducting from the University of Florida.

 

Dr. Birkner remains active as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the southeastern United States.  His professional affiliations include the Florida Music Educators Association, Florida Bandmasters Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Professional Music Fraternity.  In addition, Dr. Birkner holds honorary memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.

Mr. John M. “Jay” Watkins, Jr. serves the Gator Nation as the Associate Director of Bands, Director of Athletic Bands, Assistant Professor in the School of Music and as the Director of the “Pride of the Sunshine” - The Gator Marching Band. Prior to his appointment at UF, he served as Assistant to the Director of Bands, Assistant Director of the Longhorn Band, and Conductor of the Longhorn Basketball, Volleyball and Concert Bands at The University of Texas at Austin, where he was the principle guest conductor of the Symphony Band and the show designer for the Longhorn Band. In the past, ensembles under his direction have performed and recorded with over 36 Grammy-award winning artists in a program he developed to integrate the academic, athletics and live music communities of Central Texas. Prior to his appointment at Texas, he served as the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Charleston Southern University (SC), where he was also the Coordinator of Instrumental Music Education. Mr. Watkins has received recognition as the CSU Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year and as a recipient of the National Band Association’s “Citation of Excellence”, and was the founder, Music Director and Conductor of The Lowcountry Winds, a professional wind ensemble based in Charleston, SC. He has also served as the Director of the U.S. Navy Drum & Bugle Corps and the Director of Instrumental Music at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and as a teacher in the public schools in North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia. Prior to his work in music education, he worked for the US Naval Research Laboratory as a research associate in the areas of liquid fuel propellants and their stability and published over 75 articles in refereed science journals. 

 

Mr. Watkins is a native of Falls Church, VA and earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Music Education degrees from George Mason University and Valdosta State University. He holds professional memberships in numerous organizations, served as South Carolina State Chair and Southern Division Chair for the National Band Association, and is an elected member of Phi Beta Mu, the International Bandmaster’s Fraternity. Mr. Watkins remains very active as a designer, clinician and adjudicator throughout the country. He is married to the former Natalie Kay McLain of Duncan, SC; they have one son, Jacob.

Working in the University of Florida College of Fine Arts/School of Music/Band is a wonderful experience and I enjoy every day as a member of the School of Music. I am the go-to person if you need to schedule an appointment or need information about the UF Band. I was a Senior Secretary in the College of Agriculture at UF and worked for the Associate Dean before working at the School of Music/Bands. I have over thirty years experience in finance, bookkeeping, payroll, customer service, secretarial duties, development and administration. Before relocating to Gainesville, I worked as the Executive Director of a successful Business Networking Club in Miami, Florida, Church Administrator and owned my owned printing business for over 27 years.

 

In Miami, I was involved in various charities, service organizations and community development. I have completed the Pro3 series financial certification and have taken numerous classes earning many roles in PeopleSoft, that allow me prepare for the office: SND forms, travel, accounts payable/receivable, budgets, monthly reconciliations, PCard purchases/payments, order placement, payroll and vouchering. In addition I compose correspondence for the band staff and perform all the secretarial and reception duties for the office. I also work for the Marching Band and prepare financial reports for the University Athletic Association. I work closely with the Department of Continuing Education and I am involved with our four summer band camps, as administrator. I also collect funds and administrate, through our auxiliary, the Alumni Band Weekend and Parents Day Weekend for the Marching Band. I enjoy volunteering my time for charities, environmental causes and our community.
